The longest serving Finance Minister of Ghana Professor Kwesi Botchwey has been reported dead.
The 78 year- old former finance minister passed on after a short illness at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital on Saturday, November 19, 2022.
The ace economist and governance expert served as Finance minister under Rawlings from his days as a military ruler under the Provisional National Defense Council (PNDC) from 1982 to 1991; to Rawlings’ tenure as a democratically elected president under the NDC from 1992 to 1995.
Totally approximately 13 years of service as Finance Minister, it is not surprising he is touted the longest finance minister in Ghana.
Profile
Professor Botchwey was born on 3rd September 1944. He attended the Presbyterian Boys’ Senior High School for his secondary education. He holds a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Ghana, a Master of Laws from Yale Law School; and a Doctor of Laws from the University of Michigan Law School.
He served as a professor at the Universities of Zambia, Dar es Salaam (Tanzania), and Ghana.

He was a Professor of Practice in Development Economics at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy of Tuffs University.

He was an advisor to the World Bank on the 1997 World Development Report
Prof. Botchwey also served as Member and Chairman of IMF‘s Group of Independent Experts who conducted the first ever external evaluation of the Enhanced Structural Adjustment Facility.
He has also served so many advisory roles to global bodies including the World Bank on the 1997 World Development Report.
He was an advisor to the UNDP‘s UN Special Initiative on Africa and the European Centre for Development Policy Management (ECDPM).
