Ghana’s Defense Minister, Dominic Nitiwul and the Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery, have commenced frantic efforts aimed at brokering peace in the deadly renewed Bawku chieftaincy conflict.
The Mamprusi and Kusasis in Bawku have locked horns in a fatal conflict since November last year in over half a century of chieftaincy dispute.
About eighty persons have been killed since November 20, 2021.
There situation resulted in imposition of a dusk to dawn curfew over the municipality that included the ban on the use of motorbikes and recently the restrictions on the use of commercial tricycles.
Unfortunately, aside from the deployment of police and military in the area, no official government delegation had visited the troubled zone in an effort to mediate between the feuding factions.
The Inspector general of police Dr George Akufo-Dampare, and other relevant state authorities have been swift in dashing to comparatively less fatal conflict areas across the country.
The latest being the recent reported abduction and killing of night watchmen in Wa, the regional capital of Upper West.
The youth of Bawku at this point said they have seen enough of neglect and no concern for their plight hence they went on the street last week to protest, calling for unconditional state attention to the conflict.
They have also sent a petition to the Interior minister and other relevant state institutions.
On Sunday September 25, the interior minister Ambrose Dery, the Defense minister, Dominic Nitiwul, The inspector general of police, Dr George Akufo Dampare and the chief of defense staff, Vice Admiral Seth Amoama, together with a host of other security capos made a surprise visit to Bawku.
The team met both sides separately where there appears to be one concern on the lips of everyone; the need to return peace to bawku.
The two cabinet ministers assured systematic steps to relax the restrictions if the feuding factions can keep their words and lay down their arms.
