Security Expert Dr Alexander Acquaye has noted that most private military companies comprise ex-police and military personnel who come together and are available to be hired for security services.
He says there are several allegations that most assassination crimes are perpetuated by such personnel. First, most of them are out of service and have no use for their skills; therefore, they commercialise it on the market.
He reiterated the need for legislation to allow private security to use arms to discharge their duties. Private security is currently not authorised by law to use any arms in discharging their duties; hence Dr Acquaye asked questions regarding their safety should they face aggression in their line of work. Thus, private security is pushing for legislation to legalise the use of arms.
He opined that private security needs adequate training and capacity building. Private security is critical to augment the deficit of personnel in national security. The proper modalities should be implemented to authorise private security to use arms for their work.
