The Chinese naval hospital ship will make its first visit to Ghana as part of a humanitarian medical mission, offering consultations, dental care, eye surgery and other services to the public.
Ghana is preparing to welcome the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy hospital ship Auspicious Ark (Hull 868), which is scheduled to dock at the Tema Port on October 23, 2026, for its first-ever visit to the country.

The vessel’s arrival forms part of China’s Harmonious Mission 2026, a humanitarian medical deployment spanning parts of South Asia and Africa. The visit will run until October 30, with the ship’s medical team expected to provide free healthcare services in partnership with the Ghana Armed Forces Health Services (GAFHS).
The services are expected to benefit military personnel, their families and members of the general public.
According to the information provided by the organisers, the medical services will include general consultations, dental care, eye surgeries, maternal healthcare and traditional Chinese medicine.
The arrival offers an opportunity for patients to access a range of medical services without charge, although members of the public are required to register in advance to help manage patient numbers and coordinate treatment.
Auspicious Ark’s medical mission across West Africa
Before its scheduled arrival in Ghana, the Auspicious Ark has been undertaking medical outreach activities in several African countries as part of its overseas deployment.
The ship departed its home port in Qingdao, China, in July 2026 and has since visited Djibouti, Mauritania, Senegal, Guinea and Côte d’Ivoire.
In Mauritania, where it docked in mid-September, the medical team reportedly treated more than 7,500 patients and performed over 30 surgeries.
During its late-September visit to Dakar, Senegal, the ship’s doctors reportedly conducted 6,060 consultations and carried out 29 specialised operations.
The vessel subsequently visited Guinea from October 3 to 10, providing free clinical services to more than 4,000 people, according to the information supplied for this report.
Its most recent stop before Ghana was Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, where it arrived on October 14 for a seven-day medical outreach programme.
The mission’s activities across these countries form the backdrop to the upcoming visit to Tema, where the medical team is expected to continue providing services to patients.
Ghana-China health and military cooperation
The visit is expected to strengthen cooperation between Ghana and China, particularly in military health services and humanitarian medical outreach.
The Ghana Armed Forces Health Services is coordinating with the visiting medical team to facilitate access to treatment and organise patient registration.
For the public, advance registration is intended to support the management of patient numbers and ensure smoother delivery of services during the ship’s week-long stay.
Prospective patients are encouraged to register through the designated Ghana Armed Forces medical facilities or the official digital channels announced by the military.

A week-long opportunity for patients
The Auspicious Ark is scheduled to remain at Tema Port from October 23 to October 30, 2026. During that period, the medical team is expected to provide a range of free services, from general consultations to specialised procedures.
For prospective patients, the key step is to register in advance and confirm the availability of the service they require.
The ship’s visit forms part of a wider humanitarian medical deployment across Africa, bringing its medical team to Ghana after reported outreach activities in five other African countries.
As the arrival date approaches, the Ghana Armed Forces’ registration arrangements will be central to helping eligible patients access the services during the ship’s limited stay.
