Eastern Region Police Seize 1,600 of Suspected Indian Hemp, Foil ¢100,000 Bribery Attempt

The Eastern Regional Police Command has arrested three suspects after an intelligence-led anti-narcotics operation led to the seizure of 1,600 parcels of suspected Indian hemp and the foiling of an alleged ¢100,000 bribery attempt.

According to police, the operation was carried out on May 10, 2026, after the Regional Police Intelligence Department acted on a tip-off about narcotics allegedly stored at Akosombo-Bonya.

During surveillance near Krobo Girls Senior High School, officers intercepted a Hyundai Rhino truck with registration number GR 5724-15 and tracked it to a secluded area near Atua Government Hospital.

Police say they moved in while suspects were transferring sacks from the Hyundai truck into a Howo Zonda tipper truck with registration number GN 7948-21. The suspects reportedly fled into nearby bushes, but officers secured both vehicles together with the suspected narcotics.

Shortly after the seizure, a 39-year-old welder identified as Solomon Tettey allegedly approached officers and claimed ownership of both the vehicles and the consignment, which he reportedly admitted was being transported to Nigeria.

Police further disclosed that the suspect attempted to bribe officers with ¢100,000 to compromise the investigation. Officers reportedly feigned interest to gather evidence, after which the suspect transferred ¢90,000 through Mobile Money and added ¢10,000 in cash.

Backup personnel from the Regional Counter-Terrorism Unit and the Odumase Police Command subsequently moved in and arrested Solomon Tettey.

Two additional suspects, Joshua Nartey and Teye Nartey, were later arrested after reportedly surfacing at the Regional Police Headquarters.

All three suspects, together with the seized exhibits, have been handed over to the Regional Criminal Investigations Department for further investigations.

The Ghana Police Service says it remains committed to integrity and the relentless fight against drug trafficking syndicates operating within the region.
