The Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) in Tarkwa has rescued a 15-year-old Nigerian girl who was trafficked to Ghana and forced into sex work.
The arrest of one suspect and the ongoing search for another form part of a cross-border human trafficking investigation that has shocked residents of the Western Central Region.
The rescue operation took place on Monday, November 3, 2025, after police arrested twenty-five-year-old Joy Ogbonna at Aboso, near Tarkwa.
Investigations followed a complaint by the victim’s father, Ogbonno Onuigbo, in Nigeria, who reported his daughter missing in October.
The girl later managed to call home, revealing that she had been trafficked and sexually exploited in Ghana.
Police investigations revealed that one Golden Blessing, now on the run, lured the victim from Enugu to Lagos with the promise of a cleaning job.
She was later handed over to Joy Ogbonna, who transported her to Tarkwa, confined her in a room, and forced her into prostitution while collecting the proceeds.
A medical report later confirmed that the victim is five weeks pregnant.
The suspect, Joy Ogbonna, is in police custody and will soon be arraigned before the court.
Meanwhile, efforts are underway to track down her accomplice, Golden Blessing, believed to be in Nigeria.
The Western Central Regional Police Command has commended the public for their support and reaffirmed its commitment to fighting human trafficking and protecting vulnerable persons from all forms of abuse and exploitation.
The rescue adds to growing concerns about cross-border human trafficking networks between Ghana and Nigeria.
Authorities say they are stepping up surveillance and community education to prevent similar incidents.
