The Bolgatanga Technical Institute in the Upper East Region has been closed down indefinitely following violent riots sparked by the suspension of five students over dress code violations.

According to school authorities, the suspended students were penalized for flouting new dress code regulations introduced to enhance campus security and prevent non-students from infiltrating the school. However, some students claimed the rules were not properly communicated.

Tensions escalated on the night of August 15, 2025, when a group of students, allegedly in solidarity with the suspended students, went on a rampage, setting fire to the school library and the Senior House Master’s office. The destruction forced administrators to close down the school and order all students to vacate the premises.

Authorities say the unrest was compounded by reported threats from the suspended students against school prefects. Efforts to restore calm came too late, as significant damage had already been done.

The shutdown has left students and staff unsettled, with many calling for a thorough investigation into the causes of the riot and measures to prevent a recurrence.
