The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has officially cut the sod for the construction of a new ward complex at the Police Hospital in Accra.
Speaking at the ceremony, the IGP revealed that the idea for the project was born during a visit to the hospital to see a colleague on admission. Observing the limited space available for personnel and their families, he and other members of the police management team felt compelled to act.
“When you get a comfortable space, it’s another healing power. We want a place for our men, our families, and even those who have retired from active service. This project will serve all of them,” he said.

The ward complex, which is part of a broader vision to improve healthcare facilities for police officers, their families, and retirees, will be fully funded through contributions from police personnel under the Police Welfare Scheme. Additional support is being sought from the public, corporate bodies, and other institutions.
“Government cannot do it alone. We call on members of the public, companies, and financial institutions—many of whom enjoy 24/7 police protection- to support this project. Together, we can make it a reality,” the IGP appealed.

The new ward complex is expected to ease congestion at the Police Hospital, improve recovery conditions for patients, and ultimately enhance the quality of healthcare for officers and their dependents.
