27 Arrested, Excavators and Weapons Seized in Major Anti-Illegal Mining Operation at Ankaase Gyadam

The Ghana Police Service, in a coordinated intelligence-led operation, has arrested twenty-seven (27) male suspects during an anti-illegal mining exercise at Ankaase Gyadam, near Asamang Tamfoe in the Eastern Region. The operation took place on Friday, 25th July 2025.

According to the Police, the suspects were caught actively engaging in illegal mining at several sites across the area. During the operation, some individuals attempted to obstruct and attack the officers, wielding machetes and other offensive weapons.

Police successfully seized eleven (11) excavators, one (1) bulldozer, one (1) pump-action shotgun, three (3) saloon cars, one (1) Mitsubishi pickup truck, one (1) pick loader, multiple water pumping machines, and other mining equipment from the sites.

All suspects are currently in police custody assisting with investigations, while the seized items remain in secure police storage.

The Ghana Police Service has reaffirmed its commitment to support the national fight against illegal mining to protect the environment and natural resources for future generations.
