Accra Police Arrest Suspect over Assault on JoyNews Journalist During Wontumi Protest

The Accra Regional Police Command has arrested a suspect in connection with the recent assault on JoyNews journalist, Latif Iddrisu.

The incident occurred on 27th May 2025, around 7:00 p.m., during a protest staged in front of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in Accra. The demonstration, which involved members and supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), including some Members of Parliament, was organised in opposition to the arrest of the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

While covering the protest, Latif Iddrisu was assaulted by some individuals among the demonstrators.

Following a detailed investigation, police arrested Theophilus Thompson, aged 55, on 7th June 2025, at approximately 5:00 p.m., in James Town. He is currently in police custody and assisting with further investigations.

The Accra Regional Police Command has assured the public that efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend other suspects involved in the attack.

The Command reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to safeguarding the rights and safety of journalists and media professionals, stressing that acts of violence against members of the press or the public will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
