The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) wishes to inform the public that our monitoring station at the University of Ghana shows an increased levels of particulate (dust). Monitoring results from January 26 to date indicates an Air Quality Index (AQT) between unhealthy (Red) and very unhealthy (purple). This corroborates the Ghana Meteorological Agency’s Harmattan Advisory Update III 2023/2024 which indicates that the harmattan season has intensified.
As indicated in the most recent Public Notice on air pollution, which was issued on 20® December 2023, the vulnerable groups especially the elderly, children, pregnant women and people with asthma and related allergies and any other persons with underlying health conditions are entreated to reduce outdoor activities where necessary.
The public further is advised to take all necessary precautionary measures to stay safe by taking note of the following:
Use pollution masks where necessary.
Desist from open burning of waste and other material.
Spnnkle water on dusty surfaces before sweeping to reduce dust emissions. Vehicle users should reduce speeding on untarred roads to reduce dust emissions.
Additionally, reference is made to a post circulating on social media, about ‘change in weather/atmosphere across the country which is not harmattan’. The EPA categorically denies issuing any such communication. The public 1s therefore strongly advised to disregard the aforementioned social media post.
EPA continues to monitor the situation and will promptly update the public on any development. Additional information on the AQIs monitored in the past can be assess at
