The 2023 and 47th Sports Writers Association of Ghana, SWAG, Awards organized on Saturday, January 28, 2023, saw 18-year-old Abraham Mensah, winning the Amateur Boxer of the year.
Abraham is a member of the National Boxing team, the Black Bombers, who trains with the Seconds Out gymnasium, and has excelled in the year under review by winning silver medal at the Birmingham Commonwealth games.
He made it to the finals of the men’s bantamweight division after clean victories over Welshman, Owain Harris-Allan in Bermingham but eventually lost 5-0 in the finals against Dylan Eagleson.
Abraham Mensah had earlier won Gold at the 2022 Individual Championship.
Young Abraham has been consistent in all competitions he participated in since 2016 where he won the Feast for feast championship.
He proceeded to win the 2017 Temale Real innovation championship, the 2018 National and Individual Championships as well as silver in the 2019 Fist of Fury finals.
In all, Abraham Mensah has won a total number of 8 medals; 5 Golds, 2 Silver and 1 Bronze.
The steady rise of Abraham perhaps made the difference on the SWAG Awards night when beat another Commonwealth Games Silver Medalist, Joseph Commey who again loss the the Discovery of the year award to a Tennis player.
Both the Ghana Boxing Authority, GBA and the Ghana Boxing Federation, GBF, were among 5 Best Sporting Disciplines adjudged by the Swag for the year 2022. Others recipients were Athletics, Arm wrestling and Cycling Associations.
