Western Regional Police Investigate Fatal Shooting at Mining Site in Adelekezu

The Western Regional Police Command has launched investigations into a fatal shooting incident that occurred at a mining company site at Adelekezu, near Dadwen in the Axim District, on Saturday, December 13, 2025.

The incident resulted in the death of a boy and the destruction of several properties belonging to the mining company.

Police who responded to the scene found two 4×4 SUV vehicles and two tipper trucks burnt, while a pickup vehicle and a Toyota Land Cruiser were damaged during the disturbances.

Preliminary investigations indicate that some youth from Adelekezu had a confrontation with private security personnel at the mining site after attempting to invade the company’s concession. During the altercation, the youth allegedly tried to seize a pump-action gun from one of the security guards. The guard resisted and discharged the weapon, hitting the boy.

The victim was rushed to the Axim Government Hospital for treatment, but was pronounced dead on arrival.

The boy’s death reportedly triggered anger among residents, leading to a violent rampage at the mining site. Youth in the area allegedly set company vehicles ablaze, vandalised property, and threatened to lynch workers at the site.

Police intervened and successfully rescued 11 workers from the area. Five suspects, Gyenyame Owusu (38), Matthew Asamah (24), Nana Yaw (15), Yaw Opoku (16), and Kojo Agyei (21), have been arrested for causing harm and unlawful damage.

The Western Regional Police Command has appealed to residents to remain calm and cooperate with ongoing investigations to ensure justice is served.

The statement signed by the Head of Public Affairs unit of the western regional police command, Superintendent Olivia ET Adiku, assured the public that further updates will be provided as the investigations progress.
