Upper West Police Arrest 9, Recover Weapons After Mob Attack on Officers at Saawie

The Upper West Regional Police Command says it has arrested nine suspects and recovered four service weapons after a violent attack on police officers at Saawie, a community in the Jirapa Municipality.

The incident occurred on Friday, December 5, 2025, when about 30 youths allegedly attacked officers who were in the community to conduct enquiries. According to the police, the mob seized four service weapons from the officers and inflicted injuries on them.

Weapons Retrieved, Injured Officers Rescued

Following the attack, the Regional Police Commander, DCOP Francis Yiribaare, led a reinforcement team to Saawie, where the injured officers were rescued and evacuated for treatment. Police say all four weapons have been recovered, while efforts are currently underway to retrieve two missing magazines.

Nine suspects linked to the attack have since been arrested and will be processed for court.

Injured Officers Receiving Treatment

Three officers were injured in the attack. Two have been treated and discharged, while another officer with a fractured arm has been transferred to the Wa Regional Hospital for further medical care.

Police Condemn Attack, Call for Calm

The Regional Command has condemned the mob action, describing it as a “heinous attack” on law enforcement personnel. It assured the public that decisive measures are being taken to protect officers and residents.

The Command is appealing to residents of Saawie and surrounding communities to support ongoing investigations, urging anyone with relevant information to assist in the arrest of other suspects and the recovery of outstanding items.

“Residents’ cooperation is essential to ensure justice and maintain public safety,” the police statement noted.
