A heartbreaking tragedy has struck the town of Asankragwa, as a well-known businessman, identified as Mr. Bonnah, was crushed to death barely 24 hours after relocating to his newly completed residence at Apowa in the Western Region with his newlywed wife and their two-month-old baby.
The fatal incident occurred around 10:20 a.m. on Thursday, June 6, 2025, at Tanokrom, a suburb of Takoradi, according to a report by 3news.com.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as horrific and emotionally disturbing. The accident involved a timber-loaded trailer that reportedly lost control while travelling from Tanokrom toward Fijai. The vehicle veered into a commercial minibus, popularly known as a trotro, filled with passengers en route from Takoradi to Kojokrom.
The driver of the trotro, Nkansah Kyerematen, recounted the terrifying moments leading to the crash. He said he noticed the trailer reversing uncontrollably toward them just meters from the Tanokrom Pipeano traffic light. In a desperate attempt to avoid a collision, he swerved and hit another vehicle behind him.
Despite his effort to avert disaster, the trailer still rammed into the minibus.
“All the passengers in my vehicle started running away after my mate forcefully opened the door. It was later that eyewitnesses told me one of the passengers trying to escape through the door had been run over by the trailer and killed,” Kyerematen recounted.
Takoradi-based Connect FM journalist, Paa Kwesi Simpson, who arrived at the scene shortly after the crash, contacted the Ghana National Fire Service. Emergency personnel responded swiftly, towing the trailer and retrieving the lifeless body from the wreckage.
Family members later identified the deceased as Bonnah. They revealed that he had moved into his new home at Apowa just a day before the incident, accompanied by his newly married wife and their infant.
According to relatives, Bonnah was on his way to Kojokrom to buy tiles to furnish their new house when the fatal crash occurred.
His body has since been deposited at the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital morgue, while officers from the Sekondi-Takoradi Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.
