The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service is investigating the gruesome murder of Assistant Inspector of Immigration, Stephen King Amoah, popularly known as Otumfuor Nana, who was reported missing in early July 2025.

On July 4, 2025, the Kwabenya District Police Command received a complaint about the disappearance of Assistant Inspector Amoah, an officer attached to the Sports Department of the Ghana Immigration Service Headquarters in Accra.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the officer left his residence at Ashongman Estate around 8:00 p.m. on July 3, after receiving WhatsApp images of cash bundles from one Bright Aweh (alias Roberts or Highest Bright), who requested to meet him to settle an outstanding debt. Amoah never returned home that evening, and attempts to reach him proved futile, as his phone had been switched off.

Following police operations on July 6, the suspect Bright Aweh was arrested. During interrogation, he admitted meeting the deceased and handing him 500,000 cedis, claiming that 200,000 cedis was to be used to pay debts, while the remaining 300,000 cedis was to be kept for later collection. However, inconsistencies in his statements and his inability to explain the source of the money raised further raised suspicion. He was initially charged with kidnapping and arraigned before the Kwabenya Circuit Court on July 8.

The case took a darker turn on July 9, when a severely burnt body was discovered in a gutter near GBC Satellite, opposite Comet Estate in Accra. The body was transported to the Police Hospital morgue, where the deceased’s relatives later confirmed the identity as Stephen King Amoah despite the extent of the burns.

On July 16, a joint team from the CID, Counter-Terrorism Unit, and Kwabenya Police searched the suspect’s residence. Forensic evidence, including bloodstains, freshly painted walls, and an empty spray paint can, was found. Further searches near the GBC Satellite area revealed a burnt woollen carpet with bloodstains and partially burnt camouflage fabric.

A court-ordered search on July 24 uncovered more bloodstains in the suspect’s room, and a blood-stained fufu pestle wrapped in polythene was found in nearby bushes. The suspect’s vehicle, also impounded, contained visible bloodstains. All samples collected have tested positive for human blood.

DNA samples have been collected from the deceased’s mother and son for further profiling. In light of mounting evidence, the suspect has been re-arrested and charged with murder. He is currently on remand after appearing before the Adabraka District Court and is expected to reappear on August 8, 2025.

A special police operation is ongoing to track and arrest additional suspects believed to have assisted in the murder.

The Ghana Police Service assures the public that the investigation is progressing with urgency and thoroughness, and all perpetrators will be brought to justice.
