The pressure group, Occupy Ghana, has blamed the government for the failing fight against illegal mining.
in a strongly worded statement the group said the government has shown that it is incapable and not ready to fight the menace.
‘We are befuddled and dumbstruck at the government’s absolute impotence in the face of brazen destruction of the lands and wanton poisoning of the water bodies.
the statement continued, Every law required to regulate the mining industry exists
Every government agency required to enforce the laws, namely the Lands and Natural Resources Ministry, the Minerals Commission, the police, the courts and even the military, exists.
There are chiefs in all the villages the plunder happens.
Every affected district has a district chief executives
it noted that these people cannot feign ignorance and pretend to be innocent.
the statement added that what is going on defies reason and gives credence to the rumour that those who should be fighting this crime, are those involved and benefit it from it’ .
The statement further reminded the president of his promise on July 10, 2017, when he stated that he would put his presidency on the line for the galamsey fight.
