President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo- Addo has nominated Lariba Zuweira Abudu as the Minister-Designate for Gender, Children and Social Protection. She is currently the Member of Parliament for Walewale.
The president, on Thursday, July 28, terminated the appointment of Hon. Adwoa Sarfo as Minister for that sector under Article 81 (a) of the Constitution. The decision was announced after the Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin had deferred his decision on her fate as substantive MP for the Dome Kwabenya Constituency.
This was because she had been absent from parliament for over 15 working days and has failed to appear before the house after being summoned. Her absence from parliamentary duties and as a minister of state has dramatically affected the work of the gender ministry, which caused the president to appoint Hon. Cecilia Dapaah as caretaker minister. She cites the ailing health of her son as the reason for her absence in an interview.
Member of Parliament for Kwabre East, Francisca Oteng Mensah as Deputy Minister-designate for the sector. Their appointment is, however, subject to the approval of parliament.
“The President is hopeful that Parliament will expedite the approval of his nominees for this important Ministry, so they can assist in the effective delivery of his mandate for his second term in office,” a statement signed by the Director of Communications at the Office of the President, Eugene Arhin said.
