A targeted intelligence-led operation by the Ghana Police Service on Sunday, June 8, 2025, led to the arrest of two suspects attempting to smuggle 250 bags of cocoa beans out of the country.

According to police sources, the arrests follow two weeks of surveillance of a suspected cocoa beans and illicit drug smuggling syndicate operating in Elmina.

The operation, conducted around 11:00 p.m., resulted in the arrest of Andy Kwofie, who was intercepted while driving a Hyundai Mighty truck with registration number CR 726-25, loaded with cocoa beans.

During interrogation, Kwofie disclosed that the consignment was to be handed over to Francis Armah, believed to be responsible for ferrying the goods by sea to neighbouring countries. Armah was also arrested later that same night.

The impounded truck is currently being held at the Regional Police Headquarters in Cape Coast, while both suspects remain in custody and are assisting with investigations.

“Efforts are underway to track down and arrest other members of the illicit cocoa and drug syndicate,” the police said in a statement.

Authorities are urging the public to report any suspicious activities related to smuggling or organized crime to the nearest police station.
