Police Arrest Driver Over 713 Slabs of Suspected Narcotic Drugs at Bekwai Checkpoint

The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has arrested a suspect for the unlawful possession of large quantities of substances suspected to be narcotic drugs following an intelligence-led operation at Asanso near Bekwai in the Ashanti Region.

The suspect, identified as Atampugri Akanyani, was arrested on Monday, January 26, 2026, while driving a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter bus with registration number AC 718-25. He was intercepted by a police patrol team mounted on a snap checkpoint duty at Asanso.

A thorough search of the vehicle led to the discovery of nine nylon sacks concealed in the bus. Upon inspection, the sacks were found to contain dried leaves suspected to be narcotic drugs. Further examination revealed a total of seven hundred and thirteen (713) compressed slabs of the suspected substances.

Police sources disclosed that during the arrest, the suspect allegedly attempted to bribe officers with an amount of GH¢150,000.00 to obstruct the operation. The offer was firmly declined by the officers, who proceeded with his arrest in line with standard procedures.

The suspect is currently in police custody, assisting with ongoing investigations. Meanwhile, the police have intensified efforts to trace the origin of the suspected narcotic drugs and to identify other individuals who may be connected to the illegal activity.

The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has reiterated its commitment to combating drug trafficking and related crimes and urged the public to continue supporting law enforcement agencies with credible information to help maintain peace and security in the region.
