NDC Dismisses Claims of Third-Term Agenda for President Mahama, Calls Rumours “Unfounded and Dangerous”

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has forcefully rejected suggestions that it plans to amend the 1992 Constitution to enable President John Dramani Mahama to seek a third presidential term, describing the claims as baseless and potentially harmful.

In a statement issued by the party’s National Secretariat on Thursday, December 11, 2025, National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah said the NDC has taken note of heightened public discussion following remarks attributed to Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga about a possible review of presidential term limits.

However, the Chairman made it clear that the party has absolutely no interest, now or in the future, in pursuing such an amendment.

“The NDC has no intention, now or in the future, of mandating its Parliamentary Majority to pursue or support any amendment to the 1992 Constitution that seeks to extend or alter the two-term presidential limit,” Asiedu Nketiah stressed.

“Our Position is Non-Negotiable”

He emphasised that the NDC’s stance is longstanding and firmly rooted in the party’s own role in shaping Ghana’s constitutional democracy.

“As the political tradition that led the drafting and adoption of the 1992 Constitution, the NDC remains fully committed to the safeguards we established more than three decades ago,” he said.

According to him, the two-term presidential cap was intentionally designed “to safeguard national stability, prevent the abuse of executive authority, and protect the integrity of our governance system.”

Warning Against Constitutional Tampering

Asiedu Nketiah cautioned that any attempt to revise this “critical pillar” of the Fourth Republic could have serious consequences for national cohesion.

“A third-term amendment will introduce needless tension, invite instability, and undermine the peace Ghana has enjoyed under the Fourth Republic,” he warned.

He further noted that the NDC will not “sponsor, support, entertain, or tolerate” any proposal to adjust term limits for the benefit of any individual—including President Mahama.

Mahama’s Commitment to Constitutionalism

The statement described President Mahama as a leader who has consistently shown unwavering respect for the Constitution and Ghana’s democratic values. The party urged the public to disregard claims suggesting he might support any effort to extend presidential tenure.

Focus Remains on Governance, Not Term Limits

The NDC reiterated that its priorities are centered on governance reforms, economic recovery, national unity, and strengthening state institutions.

“Our focus remains on national development, not on tampering with term limits,” the statement added.

The party reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the Constitution it authored, insisting that doing so is essential to preserving Ghana’s peace and democratic progress.
