NAIMOS Cracks Down on Illegal Mining at Hiawa Koofrom, Chinese Nationals Arrested, Weapons and Excavators Seized

The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has intensified its nationwide offensive against illegal mining, recording a breakthrough at Hiawa Koofrom in the Amenfi Central District of the Western Region.

An intelligence-led operation by the NAIMOS task force on Tuesday led to the arrest of three Chinese nationals, the seizure of a pump-action shotgun with four cartridges, and the impoundment of two heavy-duty excavators used for destructive mining activities along the Ankobrah River.

According to officials, the team acted swiftly on credible intelligence from an informant who provided the exact GPS coordinates of the illegal mining site. The task force departed for Hiawa Koo from about 0910 hours, arriving to find both Chinese and Ghanaian miners operating along the riverbanks.

However, some suspects fled into nearby forests after being alerted by local Okada riders of the taskforce’s approach. Despite this, three Chinese miners were apprehended at the scene.

A Nissan Navara pickup truck, a pump-action gun with four cartridges, and several mobile phones belonging to the suspects were seized. The operation also uncovered two excavators, along with large mounds of sand and pay dirt, indicating extensive environmental damage to the area’s water bodies and farmlands.

NAIMOS officials say the latest operation forms part of an ongoing national strategy to dismantle illegal mining networks, particularly those involving foreign nationals. The arrested suspects are currently assisting investigations.

Authorities reaffirmed their commitment to protecting Ghana’s natural resources, warning that individuals or groups engaged in galamsey — including those who aid or shield perpetrators — will be prosecuted without exception.
