Honouring a Lifetime of Service: Accra Metropolitan University Confers Honorary Doctorate on IGP Christian Tetteh Yohuno

In a moment filled with pride and reflection, the Acting Vice-Chancellor of Accra Metropolitan University, Gorski Alarbi, delivered a stirring citation to honour Inspector General of Police, IGP, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, with an Honorary Doctorate, recognising nearly four decades of distinguished service to Ghana.

“Today we gather not only to celebrate academic excellence, but to honour a man whose life and work have safeguarded the very foundation on which free societies thrive, law, order, and justice.”

Born on the proud Ga-Dangme soil of Nungua, IGP Yohuno’s story is a testament to unwavering dedication, humility, and integrity. Joining the Ghana Police Service in 1985 as a recruit, he quickly rose through the ranks, graduating as the best recruit from the Police Training School in Winneba in 1986.

Over nearly forty years, his career has spanned crucial leadership roles, including: Accra Regional Commander, Director General of Operations, Director General of Special Duties, Founding Director General of the Police Intelligence Directorate, Director General of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department, Director General of Administration, Deputy Inspector General of Police in Charge of Operations.

In March 2025, he was appointed Inspector General of Police, a role he has embraced with clarity, courage, and vision.

Internationally, IGP Yohuno served with distinction in United Nations Peacekeeping Missions in Bosnia, Herzegovina, and East Timor, developing intelligence frameworks and resolving high-profile cases that strengthened both national and international security.

In recognition of his dedication, he has received multiple service medals, including the prestigious Grand Medal awarded in 2011 for his role in combating armed robbery.

The citation highlighted his academic journey, reflecting intellectual depth and commitment to lifelong learning. An alumnus of the West Africa Secondary School, Okwapiman Secondary School, the Institute of Professional Studies (now UPSA), and the University of Ghana, where he obtained an Executive Master’s degree from the University of Ghana Business School.

“IGP Christian Tetteh Yohuno brings intellectual depth to the practice of law enforcement and demonstrates that public service, when married with wisdom, can change and save lives and transform nations.”

Under his leadership, the Ghana Police Service has not only maintained law and order but also inspired a new generation of officers, upholding ethical leadership, the rule of law, and national duty.

“In recognition of his outstanding leadership in public security, his tireless service to the nation and his deep commitment to justice and democratic governance, the Governing Council of Accra Metropolitan University confers this honorary Doctor of Laws, LLD honoris COUSA” the Acting Vice-Chancellor announced.

As the audience applauded, the citation closed with a reminder that beyond titles and achievements, it is the courage to serve and the vision to protect future generations that truly define a leader.

IGP Christian Tetteh Yohuno’s story is not just one of professional excellence but of a lifelong commitment to peace, justice, and the greater good of Ghana.
