The Oti Regional Police Command has thwarted a suspected arms trafficking operation after intercepting a truck transporting a firearm and large quantities of ammunition concealed among building materials.

On 8 February 2026, the Oti Regional Police Intelligence Department (PID/Oti), acting on intelligence, intercepted a Kia Rhino truck with registration number GS 4677-17, which was travelling from Accra to Kpandai in the Northern Region.

A search conducted on the vehicle led to the discovery of one locally manufactured single-barrel shotgun and twenty-one (21) boxes of ammunition, containing a total of five hundred and twenty-five (525) rounds of Lion AAA and BB cartridges. The exhibits were carefully concealed among building materials, in an apparent attempt to evade detection.
The driver, Abubakari Salam Atta, aged 35, and his mate, Kabuja Kwadwo Tademe, aged 19, who both claimed ownership of the firearm and ammunition, were immediately arrested.

The two suspects are currently in police custody, assisting with investigations, and are expected to be arraigned before court in due course.
The Oti Regional Police Command has assured the public that operations to identify and remove illegal weapons from communities will be intensified, as part of ongoing efforts to curb violent crime and safeguard public safety.
