Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, the vice president, has promised that the Mahama-led government won’t interfere excessively in public university issues instead enabling their management and councils to do their mandated duties.

Speaking on Saturday, June 28, at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology’s (KNUST) 58th Special Congregation, she emphasized the government’s dedication to institutional autonomy and academic freedom.

She stated that although the government will make sure institutions adhere to pertinent laws, rules, and guidelines, its involvement through the Ministry of Education would only be used to enforce compliance and not for political purposes.

“The government places a high premium on academic freedom and ensures smooth functioning of government councils and management.

“I want to assure you that His Excellency John Dramani Mahama is firmly committed to empowering university councils and managements to perform their statutory duties without undue political interference,” Prof. Opoku-Agyemang stated.
