Ghana Boxing IMC Set to Lift Suspension on Professional Boxing Following Approval of Enhanced Medical and Safety Protocols

3 Min Read

The National Sports Authority (NSA) has announced that the suspension on professional boxing in Ghana will officially be lifted on Thursday, November 6, 2025, following extensive consultations with the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Interim Management Committee (IMC) overseeing the sport’s normalisation process.

In what looks like a draft sighted on Tuesday, November 4, the NSA says the decision was arrived at after the IMC reported significant progress in addressing the key issues that prompted the suspension earlier this year, notably in the areas of medical and safety standards, governance, and administrative reform.

According to the NSA, this milestone marks “a major step toward restoring Ghana’s illustrious and proud boxing heritage,” which has produced world champions and earned the nation global recognition in the sport.

Enhanced Safety and Governance Framework

The IMC has successfully developed and secured approval for a new set of enhanced medical and safety protocols to safeguard athletes and ensure professionalism within the sport.
The comprehensive framework includes:

  • Published Medical and Safety Manuals, Codes, and Regulations
  • A Functional Interim Medical Commission
  • A Centralized Medical Database
  • An Approved Insurance Framework
  • A Sustainable Medical Support System
  • Certified Ringside and Medical Staff

These reforms form the foundation for what the NSA describes as “a credible, safe, and internationally respected return to professional boxing.”

The roadmap also outlines a clear, accountable pathway for monitoring compliance and ensuring that athlete welfare, institutional integrity, and public confidence remain at the heart of the sport’s revival.

Commitment to a Safe and Vibrant Boxing Future

The NSA commended the IMC, athletes, promoters, and all stakeholders for their patience and cooperation throughout the period of reform.
“The Authority looks forward to a vibrant return of professional boxing,” the statement read, encouraging local and foreign promoters and investors to bring international bouts and collaborations to Ghana under the newly enhanced standards.

In the coming weeks, the IMC and the NSA are expected to roll out a series of education and stakeholder engagement programs, introducing new partnerships aimed at improving the welfare of Ghanaian boxers and promoting the nation’s boxing brand globally.

The NSA further assured that the Ghana Boxing Medical and Anti-Doping Team will lead the implementation, monitoring, and compliance of all safety and medical measures as sanctioned events resume across the country.

The Authority reaffirmed its commitment to working with all partners to ensure a safe, professional, profitable, and sustainable future for Ghana boxing.
