Four Arrested for Lynching 70-Year-Old Woman Accused of Witchcraft in Bunkpurugu

Police in the Bunkpurugu-Yunyoo District of the North East Region have arrested four suspects in connection with the brutal murder of a 70-year-old woman, Noab Bilatukin, at Sangbana village near Bunkpurugu.

The suspects, identified as Suuk Jakwa (67), Banyiwoo Ntookwib (32), Moapya Kwayaja (30), and Amos Nlaji (29), along with other accomplices currently at large, allegedly accused the victim of being a witch and lynched her on 10th July 2025. They reportedly fled the village immediately after committing the crime.

Following intelligence-led operations on 14th July 2025, police arrested the four at separate hideouts in nearby villages around Bunkpurugu. The suspects are currently in custody, assisting with investigations, and will be arraigned in court upon completion of the process.

The Police have strongly reiterated their call on the public particularly residents of the North East Region — to refrain from accusing individuals, especially the elderly, of witchcraft and subjecting them to violence. The statement warned that anyone involved in such acts would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
