Winneba, June 2025 – A tragic road accident at Winneba Junction on the Winneba-Cape Coast highway has claimed the life of a taxi driver and left nine others — including three school children — in critical condition.
The incident, which occurred around 4:30 PM on Monday, involved a Hyundai Daewoo taxi with registration number CR 748-20, and a Toyota RAV4, registered GN 5505-18.

According to the Ghana National Fire Service, the taxi was transporting school children from Winneba to Apam, while the Toyota RAV4 was headed from Mankessim towards Winneba. The accident reportedly occurred when a Sprinter Benz bus made a wrongful overtaking manoeuvre and failed to stop in time.
In an effort to avoid the oncoming bus, the driver of the Toyota RAV4 swerved into the taxi, resulting in a violent head-on collision.

All nine injured persons have since been rushed to the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital for emergency treatment. The identity of the deceased taxi driver has not yet been released.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the accident and are urging drivers to exercise caution on the road, particularly on busy highways.
