Court Remands Suspect over Unlawful Possession of Narcotic Drugs

The fight against narcotic drug abuse and trafficking continues to feature prominently on the dockets of courts across the country, as law enforcement agencies intensify efforts to clamp down on the unlawful possession and circulation of illegal substances.

In the Central Region, police investigations recently led to the arrest and prosecution of a suspect accused of possessing narcotic drugs without lawful authority.

A suspect, Awudu Osman, has been remanded into police custody by the Agona Swedru District Court over the unlawful possession of narcotic drugs.

The suspect was arraigned before the court on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, at about 11:30 a.m., on a provisional charge of possessing narcotic drugs without lawful authority.

The court, presided over by Victor Kusi, ordered that the suspect be remanded into police custody pending further investigations.

Following the proceedings, the court adjourned the case and directed that the suspect reappears on March 11, 2026, for continuation of the matter.

Police say investigations into the case are ongoing as part of broader efforts to curb drug-related offences and protect public safety.

The case is expected to resume when the suspect is brought back before the court on the adjourned date.

Background:

On 24th February 2026, at about 8:30 a.m., the Agona Swedru District Police Command conducted a targeted operation at Agona Asafo and along the Agona Kwesitsukwaa Road, leading to the arrest of two suspects for unlawful possession of suspected narcotic drugs.

During the operation, police intercepted a taxi cab with registration number GR 2932-26, driven by Godfred Acquah, aged 28, with his accomplice Awudu Usman, aged 34, on board. A search of the vehicle uncovered 154 compressed slabs of dried leaves suspected to be narcotic drugs, concealed in four nylon sacks.

Further investigations led officers to the residence of Awudu Usman at Asisim, Agona Swedru, where an additional 55 compressed slabs of the suspected narcotic substance were retrieved. This brings the total haul to 209 compressed slabs. The suspect reportedly claimed ownership of the drugs.

Police also disclosed that the suspects attempted to bribe officers with ¢100,000, an offer which was firmly rejected.
