The Central Regional Office of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has confirmed that a total of 4,636 people have been displaced by recent floods and fire outbreaks across the region.

Speaking at a press conference, the Central Regional NADMO Director, Kwesi Dawood, revealed that the displaced victims are currently seeking shelter in churches, mosques, classrooms, and with relatives, living conditions he described as increasingly distressing.

Mr. Dawood reported that five people were trapped during the disasters, with two fatalities recorded. The deceased were identified as Atta Panyin, a 79-year-old woman, and Opanyin Emmanuel Ankaful, an 84-year-old man. The other three victims are receiving treatment at a hospital after a 50-year-old brick structure collapsed on them following nearly seven hours of torrential rainfall in Cape Coast.

According to NADMO, 11 Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) have been severely affected by the floods, prompting urgent calls for assistance from NGOs, private individuals, and philanthropists.

So far, three dangerously weak storey buildings have been demolished as part of the emergency response efforts. Dawood stated that the NADMO Directorate, in collaboration with the Central Regional Coordinating Council, will intensify efforts in the coming days to identify and demolish all old and dilapidated structures across the region to prevent further disasters during the ongoing rainy season.
