Big Push for Barracks: President Mahama Unveils Foreign-Built Housing Plan for Police and Military

President John Dramani Mahama has announced a major housing initiative for Ghana’s security services, revealing that his government has commissioned a Singaporean company to construct accommodation for personnel of the Ghana Police Service, Ghana Prison Service, Ghana National Fire Service, and the Ghana Armed Forces.

The President disclosed that he signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the company during his official visit to Singapore in 2025, paving the way for the establishment of a prefabricated housing plant in Ghana.

Speaking at the Ghana Police Service end-of-year event (WASSA) held at the Police Headquarters in Accra, President Mahama said the company’s first major project in Ghana was the construction of a 10,000-student dormitory at the University of Ghana.

“But we have also commissioned them to build housing for our Police Service, our Prisons, Fire Service, and the Ghana Armed Forces,” the President stated.

He explained that the initiative forms part of the government’s Big Push Agenda, which aims to address longstanding accommodation challenges within the security services and significantly improve the living conditions of personnel.

President Mahama urged the leadership of the various security agencies to begin identifying available lands within their barracks to facilitate the project.

“Start identifying your lands in your various barracks, where we will build this accommodation so that we can provide enough housing for our police service,” he said.

Reflecting on the significance of WASSA, the President noted that the occasion goes beyond social celebration, describing it as a moment to reflect on service, sacrifice, and the collective responsibility to safeguard Ghana’s peace and stability. He said the event also offers officers a rare opportunity to rest, strengthen camaraderie, and renew their commitment to the core values of the Service.

President Mahama commended the Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, and the Police Management for what he described as a strong security performance during the Christmas season.

“We had a lot of visitors coming into Ghana, and there was a lot of activity over the Christmas period. You made sure that crime was kept at a very, very low level, and we thank you very much for your diligence,” he said.

He observed that festive periods place extraordinary pressure on law enforcement due to increased travel, social activities, and heightened security risks. However, he noted that through careful planning, discipline, and intelligence-led operations, the Police ensured a peaceful Christmas and New Year for Ghanaians.

The President praised the strategic deployment of officers across highways, communities, markets, places of worship, transport terminals, and entertainment centres, saying the visible police presence reassured the public and demonstrated a responsive security apparatus.

He further expressed satisfaction with the speed and professionalism with which incidents were handled, noting that reports were addressed promptly, suspects were swiftly apprehended, and criminal activities were disrupted before escalation.

“Let us sustain this momentum and send a clear message that there will be no hiding place for criminal elements,” President Mahama added.
