Albania has made history by appointing the world’s first artificial intelligence (AI) minister, Diella, to oversee public tenders and combat corruption.
Diella, which means “sun” in Albanian, was originally introduced as a digital assistant on the government’s e-Albania portal to help citizens access services and complete paperwork. It has now been elevated to the role of Minister for Public Procurement, tasked with assessing and awarding tenders across the country.
The government says Diella’s data-driven, rules-based decision-making will eliminate corruption and bring transparency and credibility to public spending.
The unprecedented move, however, has sparked debate. Critics have raised questions about accountability, cybersecurity risks, and whether the AI’s decision-making processes will remain transparent to the public.
