Accra–New York Policing Alliance: IGP Yohuno Hosts NYPD Delegation to Deepen Crime-Fighting Partnership

A high-level delegation from the New York City Police Department (NYPD) has held strategic talks with the Ghana Police Service (GPS) in Accra, marking a major step toward strengthening international policing cooperation.

The delegation was received at the Police Headquarters by Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, alongside members of the Police Management Board (POMAB).

The meeting focused on modern policing challenges and opportunities for deeper collaboration between the two institutions.

Key discussions centred on the use of technology in policing, including data-driven crime analysis, digital investigative tools, and intelligence platforms that support law enforcement operations.

Both sides also examined ways to improve officer safety and welfare, highlighting the importance of training, modern equipment, and institutional support systems for personnel on the front lines.

Another major topic was police accountability and transparency in democratic societies.
The NYPD delegation shared experiences on oversight systems and community engagement strategies, while Ghana Police leadership outlined ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening public trust.

A significant outcome of the discussions was progress toward a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the two institutions.

The agreement is expected to promote information sharing, specialised training opportunities, and collaboration on investigations involving transnational crime.

During the visit, the NYPD team also engaged with key operational units of the Ghana Police Service, including the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), the INTERPOL Accra National Central Bureau, and the Police Intelligence Directorate.

The delegation was further briefed at the Joint Operations Center (JOC) at Police Headquarters on Ghana’s nationwide command and control system used for coordinating police operations and monitoring security threats.

One of the most forward-looking proposals from the visit is an officer exchange programme between the two law enforcement bodies.

Under the plan, a senior NYPD detective may be stationed at the Ghana Police Service Headquarters in Accra, while a senior Ghana Police officer could be embedded within the NYPD Intelligence Bureau in New York.

The exchange is expected to deepen investigative collaboration and build stronger institutional ties between the two departments.

Beyond the police headquarters, the NYPD delegation also paid courtesy visits to Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, and the Director-General of the National Intelligence Bureau, Charles Alhassan Kipo, where discussions focused on national security cooperation and intelligence sharing.

The team also met with the Chargé d’Affaires of the U.S. Embassy in Accra, Rolf Olson.

The visit highlights the growing partnership between the Ghana Police Service and the New York City Police Department, as both institutions work to strengthen global cooperation in tackling evolving security threats.
