The district director of Agriculture in the Tempane, Ibrahim Jamal-deen, of the Upper East region has called on farmers nationwide to accept climate change as a real and adopt climate-smart farming practices to conform to the climate change situation by adapting and mitigating capabilities to cope with the variations in the weather patterns as witnessed this year drought.
Framers across the northern sector this year experience droughts amid a shortage of fertilizers.
Most farmers this year could not buy much fertilizer due to the farm inputs not being subsidized.
The few available fertilisers that were on the market for sale turned out not to be friendly with the lands in the area hence farmers harvest low yields this year.
Ibrahim Jamal-deen has said, the extension services in the district have improved with wide coverage in the district.
Technologies are disseminated to farmers through the home and farm visits demonstrations, field days, visit the farmer-based organization and village savings and loans associations, and radio or telephone calls.
With all the above technologies farm produce has been improved in the district and a lot of teaches have been offered to farmers.
Jamal-deen however, called on the government to provide incentives for the youth to take of agriculture as a business.
According to him, the youth need farm equipment and financial support to engage in any meaningful agriculture to improve their livelihood.
Peasant farmers want the government to do the needful by leaving a legacy in the agricultural sector of making sure food items and inputs are managed.
In all 37 farmers were awarded with certificates and other agricultural inputs.
