The umbrella organisation of the various disability groups in the country, the Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations (GFD), has lauded the founder of the Charismatic Evangelistic Ministry (CEM) for initiating a project that it believes is going to provide answers to most of the challenges facing persons with disabilities (PWDs) in the country.

According to the federation, the initiative has the potential to solve the educational, health, economic needs, and many other essentials of life that persons with disabilities in the country are deprived of.

CEM Ability Village, an initiative by Rev. Dr. Steve Mensah to build a disability empowerment community, is going to be situated on a 2000-acre land at Agortor in the Shai-Osudoku District of the Greater Accra Region, at an estimated cost of $389,380,400.

The first phase, costing US$85.3 million on a 500-acre land, will commence in July 2023.

The project will provide programmes that will help PWDs to live in dignity by providing access to housing, economic activities, health care, and specialised services, and initiate projects throughout the country to help PWDs to integrate into the Ghanaian society and promote cultural change in attitudes towards PWDs.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony on Saturday, June 24, 2023, at the project site, the Executive Director of GFD, Madam Rita Kusi Kyeremaa, praised Rev. Steve Mensah for thinking about persons with disabilities.

She assured him of the organisation’s readiness to support the project with their expertise and other resources that would be required to make the dream a success.

She urged persons with disabilities in the country to be ready to take advantage of the opportunities that will be presented by the project.

The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Hon. Lariba Zuweira Abudu, also pledged her ministry’s support for the project. And called on all Ghanaians to contribute to the realisation of the empowerment village for PWDs.
