42 per cent of COVID-19 vaccines sent to the Volta region have gone waste due to vaccine hesitancy.
The acting Volta Regional Director of Health Services Dr Senanu Kwasi Dzokoto, revealed this during stakeholder sensitization at Adidome in North Tongue District.
The Volta Region targeted to vaccinate 979,000 of its population against the deadly COVID-19.
The Region had received a total of 2,151,554 COVID-19 vaccines for the purpose.
However, only a little over 27,000 of the targeted population were vaccinated as of December 2022, representing 28.1 per cent.
Health workers blamed the situation on misinformation, disinformation and misconception.
The vaccine hesitancy according to the acting volta regional director of health services, Dr. Senanu Kwasi Dzokoto, has contributed to a high number of vaccines going bad.
Dr. Dzokoto said the low turn out rate has led to the 42 per cent of the total vaccine sent to the region going bad.
One of the districts with high COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy rate is the North Tongu.
Out of over 85,500 targeted population, only little over 12,000 were fully vaccinated representing 24 per cent, making the district the lowest in the vaccine coverage in the region.
The district had recorded 3 deaths out of 175 positive cases since the pandemic.
172 persons who tested positive for the disease have since recovered.
North Tongu District Director of Health Services David Agbokpe was worried about the situation.
He said the directorate has taken a number of steps with support from some organizations aimed at educating the people on the need to take the jabs but is yet to see some improvement.
