Director General of the National Sports Authority, Professor Peter Twumasi, has described the performance of Ghana’s contingent at the just-ended Commonwealth Games as excellent.
Ghana had five medals at the games held in Birmingham, an improvement on the previous edition in Australia, where Ghana returned home with only a medal.
Ghana won a silver medal in the featherweight division through Joseph Commey, while Abdul Wahid Omar and Abram Mensah won bronze medals in their various weight categories.
Joseph Paul Amoah won bronze in the Men’s 200 meters final race, while Deborah Acquah defied all odds to win bronze in the Women’s long jump competition.
Prof. Twuamasi attributed the performance of the Ghanaian athletes to proper planning and; arrangements and the development of sporting infrastructure across the country.
Ghana ranked the 28th African country with the most medals, whereas their Nigerian counterparts ranked 7th.
Ghana presented 101 athletes who competed in 13 different sporting disciplines.
