Tokyo 2020 Olympics bronze medallist, Samuel ‘the Ring Warrior’ Takyi, and his managers leave Accra Wednesday June 8, for Johannesburg, South Africa to fight Mandlenkosi Sibuso, on Saturday June 11 at the Emperors Palace.
Takyi who won his professional debut against Kamaradeen Boyefio a couple of months ago in Accra will be facing a tough contest in Mandlenkosi Sibuso, who lost one of his four fights with one knockout victory to his credit. The bout will therefore be a great test and morale boaster the young Takyi’s career if he wins.
“I always tell Ghanaians very soon I will bring them world titles so they should pray for me. I’m going to South Africa to raise the flag, I am ready to make Ghana proud,” he told the media.
Takye is handled by the former WBA welterweight world champion and the head of Bazooka Boxing Promotions, Ike Quartey and his son Clement Quartey. The trip has become possible only after the team had signed the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) undertaking to pay a percentage of their fights abroad as prescribed by the GBA law to the authority.
It will be recalled that Ike Quartey was in the news last week, threatening to sue the GBA if it failed to grant them the authorization to travel to South Africa for the fight. But upon a retrospection, the Ike Quartey led team went back to the GBA to sign the undertaking. What is left is whether they will honour the pledge after the fight since the former world champion had a record with regards to purse percentage during the Moses Foe Amoaning’s tenure in the early 2000s.
