KNUST Student Dies after Incident at University Swimming Pool

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) is mourning the death of a third-year Chemical Engineering student, David Osei Agyapong, following an incident at the university’s swimming pool.

In a statement, the university said the incident occurred at approximately 5:10 p.m. on Saturday, November 7, 2026, when Mr Agyapong entered the water from one of the upper diving boards but failed to resurface.

Pool attendants reportedly retrieved him from the water after a few minutes and rushed him to the KNUST Hospital for emergency medical attention. However, efforts to resuscitate him proved unsuccessful.

According to the university, Mr Agyapong was an experienced swimmer, a regular user of the swimming facility and a member of the KNUST basketball team.

His death has sent shockwaves through the university community, with management describing the incident as a painful loss.

Meanwhile, the KNUST Police have commenced investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident. His body has been deposited at the School of Medical Sciences (SMS) morgue pending an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

The university says the bereaved family has been informed and has extended its condolences to his family, friends, teammates and colleagues.

Management has also appealed to the public to respect the family’s privacy and refrain from speculation or sharing unverified information as investigations and medical examinations continue.
