The Berekum Chelsea football community has been thrown into mourning after armed robbers attacked a team bus, leaving one player dead and others traumatised.
The Ghana Police Service in the Ashanti Region has launched a manhunt for a gang of armed robbers who attacked passengers on the Abyiresu–Kwarme Dwumor Sreso (KDS) road in the Nyinahin District on Sunday, April 12, 2026, at about 10:30 p.m.

Police patrol teams responded to distress calls and rushed to the scene, where they found a VIP bus with registration number AM 9334-20 that had skidded off the road into nearby bushes while attempting to escape from six armed men. Three of the attackers were reportedly wielding pump-action guns.
The bus was carrying about thirty football players and officials of Berekum Chelsea, who were travelling from Sameraboi to Berekum when the attack occurred.

During the robbery, Berekum Chelsea forward Dominic Frimpong sustained gunshot injuries. He was rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital for emergency treatment but sadly passed away while receiving medical care.
Another passenger, identified as George Owusu Afriyie, aged 52, was also robbed of ¢4,500 during the attack.
Police recovered spent BB cartridges at the scene, indicating that the attackers discharged firearms during the operation. Investigations are currently ongoing as security agencies intensify efforts to track down the suspects responsible for the deadly attack.
The incident has heightened concerns over armed robbery activities along highways, particularly at night, and has sparked renewed calls for increased security patrols to protect travellers.
Authorities are urging anyone with information that could assist in locating the suspects to report to the nearest police station as efforts continue to bring the perpetrators to justice.
