Man in Viral Video Assaulting Wife Denied Bail After Pleading Not Guilty to Seven Charges

A businessman captured in a viral video assaulting a woman believed to be his wife has been denied bail by the DOVVSU-based District Court in Accra after pleading not guilty to seven charges.

John Odartey Lamptey, 49, appeared in court on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, alongside his sister, Grace Lamptey, who is accused of threatening a key witness in the case. Both pleaded not guilty.

Lamptey faces seven charges, including causing harm, threat of death, threat of harm, physical abuse, and three counts of domestic violence—sexual abuse, emotional abuse, and conduct that diminishes another person’s dignity.

His sister, Grace Lamptey, 51, a food vendor, was granted bail of ¢20,000 with one surety and is required to report to police every two weeks. Both accused are expected back in court on December 16.

The victim, identified as Harriet Amuzu, was not present in court.

Prosecution’s Brief Facts

According to prosecutors, Lamptey and the complainant are married with two children. Investigations revealed a pattern of violent abuse.

  • In July 2025, Lamptey allegedly assaulted his wife, inserted pepper into her private parts, and forcibly had sexual intercourse with her.
  • He is also said to have seized her phone and taken away their 2-year-old child, prompting her to flee to relatives for safety.
  • On November 15, Lamptey allegedly lured the complainant back home under the pretense that their child was sick.
  • The following morning, when she attempted to leave again, Lamptey reportedly tore her clothing, stripped her naked, and threatened to kill her.
  • Prosecutors say he assaulted her with an aluminium mop stick, slippers, and later a PVC pipe—the assault captured in the viral video.
  • She eventually fled the house naked to save her life.

Lamptey’s sister, Grace, was arrested after she allegedly threatened the person who posted the viral video, saying: “I give you three days, you will die.”

The complainant later resurfaced from hiding on November 20 and underwent medical and psychological examination.

Police say investigations are complete, and the case is now before the court.
