The Ghana Police Service has launched investigations into the death of 16-year-old footballer Ransford Owusu, a junior player with the Siano Soccer Academy in Accra, following disturbing allegations of sexual abuse by his coach.
A statement signed by Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Grace Ansah-Akrofi, Director-General of Public Affairs, confirmed that the Homicide Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) is leading the probe into the case, which reportedly occurred in February 2025.
According to the police, the deceased’s mother, Ama Asantewaa, reported to the Amasaman Police that her son had fallen ill and died on February 28, 2025. Before his death, Ransford allegedly confided in her that he had been sexually assaulted by his coach, identified as Anyass Ibrahim.
Police investigations led to the arrest of suspect Anyass Ibrahim on November 4, 2025. He was interrogated, had his statement taken, and was later granted bail pending further inquiries. He has been directed to report periodically to the CID Headquarters.
Preliminary medical documents presented by the deceased’s mother, from the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) and the Maternal and Child Health Hospital in Kumasi, indicate that Ransford had been treated for liver and kidney-related complications before his death.
The Police say efforts are underway to obtain official autopsy and medical reports from the two hospitals after both institutions initially declined formal requests. A court order has since been secured to compel the release of the necessary medical records.
Meanwhile, investigations have been expanded following the circulation of a viral video allegedly showing suspect Ibrahim and a minor in a compromising situation.
The Police have urged the public to volunteer credible information that may aid the ongoing investigation by contacting the Homicide Unit at the CID Headquarters or reporting to the nearest police station.
