Executives of the governing NDC in the Kusaug area have threatened to suspend all party activities and resign from their positions if the government does not urgently resolve the long-standing communal conflict in Bawku.
The demand follows recent tensions triggered by the destruction of the statue of the area’s overlord, Zugraan Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, reportedly by military personnel accused of also brutalising civilians.
At a press conference, Bawku Central Communications Officer for the NDC, Yusif Otumba, called for the immediate restoration of the statue, a formal public apology to the Zugraan and citizens, and an independent investigation into the reported killings of women and children by military forces.

“We also want the immediate withdrawal and replacement of the current military and police leadership in the area since they have lost the moral standing in the sight of the people,” Otumba stated.
He further cautioned his party, the NDC, saying, “The NDC must choose to stand with the people or stand aside. Inaction is betrayal, and betrayal has consequences. Should these demands be ignored, we, the entire NDC executives in the Kusaug areas, will resign from our positions to protect our lives.”
Other speakers at the event criticised what they described as silence and disunity among the six Kusaug MPs, urging the government to act swiftly to bring lasting peace to the conflict-hit region.

“We voted massively for the NDC for peace, but what we have now is disappointment,” said Azumah Mbun, a constituency executive.
The executives say resignation remains their last resort to express solidarity with the people and reject complicity in what they describe as a grave injustice.
