Inhabitants of Soogo, Kansoogo, Kubougo, Sapeliga, Widnaba and other communities in the Bawku west district of the upper east region say they are living in fear following the deadly terrorist attack in Burkina Faso.

hundreds of residents of Zoaga, Bugri and Zabre in the northern province of Burkina Faso fled to Ghana following the Friday attack on their communities that left four Burkinabe police officers dead.

The inhabitants of Burkina Faso have taken refuge in Soogo, Kansoogo, Kubougo, Sapeliga and Widnaba have their fair share of the influx from neighbouring Burkina Faso, who continue to pour in by the hour.

The terrorist attack reportedly occurred in Zoaga, Bugri and Zabre, all in the northern province of Burkina Faso.

It was allegedly carried out by persons believed to be jihadist, who reportedly killed four police officers stationed at the Zoaga, and burnt police station along with a telecommunication tower.

The police were said to have killed three of the attackers who we were told killed a number of civilians as well.

Some residents of Soogo, Widnaba and other border communities in the Bawku west district of the upper east region say they are living in fear.

The residents, they feel insecure in the area due to the rate of the influx and the numbers coming in from neighbouring Burkina Faso.

They want intensified 24-hour security in the area especially on the unapproved border entry points.

Soogo, Kansoogo, Kubougo, Sapeliga and Widnaba shares a boundary with Burkina Faso.

The border between Ghana and Burkina Faso is porous in nature allowing easy access to and from either country.

People can enter Ghana or Burkina Faso at any point of choice without any hinderance.

This coupled with the limited border patrols have left the communities in Ghana highly vulnerable.

Assembly member for Soogo electoral area is concerned over the current development.

The sub-chief of Soogo, Joshua Akaami, called for support and the deployment of heavy security to protect the community.

an estimated 2,000 asylum seekers are currently being held in the border towns of Widnaba, Soogo, Kubougo and Kansoogo.
