Bawku, Upper East Region – Students of Bawku Senior High School have begun returning to campus following the tragic killing of a student by unknown gunmen, with many expressing relief over the enhanced security presence at the school.

In interviews, several students shared their preference to remain at Bawku SHS rather than be relocated to unfamiliar schools, especially as they prepare to sit for their final exams.

“I feel safer and more at peace here on campus than being sent to a school I don’t know,” said Abangiba Lamisi, one of the returning students.

Former SRC President Musah Atimbilla noted that the visible presence of security personnel has boosted morale and reduced anxiety among students.

“With the security here, we can now concentrate on our exams and stay happy.”

Anyaka Awimborim Lorvia, another student, added that the campus now feels calm and secure.

“It’s quiet and peaceful, with no gunshots or disturbances.”

The Assistant Headmaster in charge of Academics, Ibrahim Akudugu Salifu, who led a security screening of students before they re-entered the dormitories, explained the move was a safety precaution.

“We want to ensure no student brings in any offensive material that could harm others.”

Meanwhile, the Headmaster of the school, Rev. Abugbilla Bukari, confirmed that over 400 of the 703 registered students have returned so far. He expressed optimism that the remaining students will report for the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) exams scheduled to begin tomorrow.

“We are appealing to the Ghana Education Service to officially reopen the school so full academic work can resume. Our students need to catch up with their colleagues in other schools,” he said.

The school was temporarily closed after the shooting incident that claimed a student’s life, raising concerns over safety in the conflict-prone Bawku area. The current security deployment is part of efforts to restore calm and ensure the safety of both staff and students.
