The Central Regional Police Command has launched investigations into an alleged breach of prison discipline at the Ankaful Maximum Security Prisons in Cape Coast.
On Monday, January 26, 2026, at about 6:40 p.m., prison officers at Ankaful arrested two female visitors—Beauty Buerkie Buertey, 21, and Maura Amissah, 23—during a routine inspection of food items brought to inmates.
According to the police, checks on the food revealed that containers of shito concealed substances suspected to be Indian hemp. Samples of the suspected substances were forwarded to the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) in Cape Coast for analysis, where they tested positive.

During interrogation, Beauty Buerkie Buertey stated that she transported the food items from Accra to be delivered to her relatives incarcerated at the facility.
The suspects have since been detained in police custody to assist with further investigations.
The Central Regional Police Command, in collaboration with the Ankaful Maximum Security Prisons Command, has cautioned the public against attempting to smuggle narcotics or prohibited substances into correctional facilities, warning that such actions constitute serious breaches of prison regulations.
The commands have assured the public that anyone found culpable will be made to face the full rigours of the law.
