The Nkawie Divisional Police Patrol Team has successfully foiled an armed robbery attack targeting passengers aboard two Sprinter buses along the Kumasi–Bibiani highway.
The incident occurred on Monday, 2nd June 2025, at about 7:30 p.m., between Ahwerewa and Esaase.
According to police reports, five armed men ambushed the two vehicles and began robbing passengers at gunpoint. One of the assailants was reportedly wielding a pump-action shotgun.
Thanks to the swift intervention of the police patrol team, the robbery was interrupted.
Upon sighting the officers, the armed suspect opened fire.
The police returned fire, fatally wounding the gunman.
He was later pronounced dead at the Afari Government Hospital.
The remaining four suspects fled the scene and are currently on the run.
Authorities believe the fleeing suspects may have sustained gunshot wounds.
The police are therefore appealing to all health facilities and practitioners in the region to report any individuals presenting with gunshot injuries.
The deceased suspect’s body has been deposited at the Afari Government Hospital morgue for further investigation.
The Ashanti Regional Police Command has commended the Nkawie Patrol Team for their bravery and professionalism, noting that their timely response prevented what could have been a tragic incident.
The police continue to urge the public to provide any relevant information that may lead to the arrest of the remaining suspects and help in the ongoing fight against crime.
