Tension is rising in Nkwanta in the Oti Region following disturbing allegations of brutality by security forces deployed to restore calm after recent deadly clashes.
Residents of affected communities, including Keri and Gekorong, claim the operation, carried out between March 18 and 19, 2026, has left many traumatised and fearful.
The deployment followed the fatal shooting of two members of the Challa community, an incident that has further deepened already fragile tensions in the area.

Allegations of Abuse
Eyewitnesses describe troubling scenes during the military operation, with some residents alleging that women were assaulted and excessive force was used.
Several individuals are reported to have sustained injuries, while families say the experience has left lasting psychological distress.
Farmers also claim their makeshift structures and property were destroyed, leaving them without shelter and threatening their livelihoods.
In Gekorong, residents say gunfire during the operation sparked panic, forcing many to flee into nearby bushes for safety.

Underlying Tensions
The situation comes against the backdrop of longstanding disputes among the Adele, Challa and Akyode groups, largely linked to land and chieftaincy issues.
Calls for Action
Community members, particularly from the Akyode group, are demanding an immediate and independent investigation into the conduct of the security personnel.

They are also calling on the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection to intervene, especially over concerns about the alleged treatment of women.
As tensions simmer, residents are urging authorities to act swiftly to restore trust and prevent further escalation.
