Kwahu Incident: Queen Mother Released as Police Launch Investigation; Traditional Council Debunks Abduction Claims

2 Min Read

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has ordered the release of the Queen Mother of Kwahu after a police operation earlier this morning sparked public concern and widespread speculation.

According to the Ghana Police Service, the IGP has also directed the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) to investigate the circumstances surrounding the operation. Officers found to have acted unprofessionally will face sanctions.
Meanwhile, security has been heightened in and around Kwahu to ensure the safety of residents and prevent any escalation of tension.

Kwahu Traditional Council Rejects Abduction Reports

In a separate statement, the Kwahu Traditional Council dismissed media reports, particularly by Newsalertgh, claiming that the Paramount Queen of Kwahu, Nana Adwoa Gyamfuah III, had been abducted. The Council described the report as false and misleading.

The statement clarified that the police intervention followed an interlocutory injunction issued on 24th June 2024 by the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs in favour of Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II.
The court order restrains Baffour Osei Akoto, who has been presenting himself as Kwahuhene, along with the Queen Mother and others, from interfering with Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II’s authority and duties at the Abene Palace.

According to the Council, police moved in to enforce the injunction and prevent potential clashes that could threaten lives. The Council also emphasised that the Queen Mother does not reside at the Abene Palace, and none of the individuals arrested were taken from the palace grounds.

Allegations of Attempts to Take Over Palace

The Traditional Council statement signed by the president, Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II, further alleged that the Queen had mobilised thugs in an attempt to forcibly take over the Abene Palace, issuing threats that could disrupt the legitimate administration of the Kwahu stool.

All persons arrested, the Council noted, are in lawful custody, safe, and in good health.

A copy of the official court order issued by the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs has been provided by the Council for public verification.
