Creating the Next Generation of Champions in Chorkor

2 Min Read

The next generation of champions from this coastal suburb are being produced at a makeshift facility that is located right next to the Community Health Post in the heart of Chorkor, an Accra slum settlement.

The Chorkor Champions Boxing Gym, established in 2019, is steadily gaining ground in the boxing stratosphere. It is situated in an area known for producing credible world level fighters, including Percy Oblitei Commey, Ben Wonder Tackie, Lartekwei Hammond, Patrick Allotey, Isaac Nettey, Isaac Quartey, and most recently Michael “One Bullet” Ansah and Richard Lartey.

Trainer Ben Tagoe, the gym’s founder, was an amateur star who had to withdraw from competition due to injuries.

He wisely decided to focus his energies on instructing, and as a result, the Chorkor Champions Boxing Gym was founded.

A number of potential have been discovered in the past nearly five years, most notably the young phenomenon Godfred Coffee, better known as Oko CP or Chorkor Pacman.

Among the promising young athletes from this stable are Vandorf Ocran, Michael Akramah Tetteh, David Tagoe, Paul Mbanugo, Solomon Aryeetey, Richmond Aryeetey, and Janet Acquah.

Coach Ben, who himself had instruction from the late Napoleon Tagoe (Ayaa Napo), a former cruiserweight world title contender, recalls the challenges he faced in the beginning:

“It was incredibly challenging, but I had to endure and make sacrifices.

Also, I received other people’s support, which truly helped me keep the dream on track.

He named some of the people who have supported the gym thus far as Ayi Spear, Shado Shanty, Papa Anago, Paa Tee, Fero, Asaa Sniper, and Georgina.

He also requested support from private citizens as well as organizations.

Training sessions were particularly tough when this reporter visited the gym because it was getting ready for the upcoming Ghana Professional Boxing League as well as other fights both locally and abroad.
